ABOUT THE CLIENT

The client manufactures sensors for large-scale tunnel boring machines (TBMs), used to construct underground infrastructure such as metro lines, sewage systems, and undersea tunnels worldwide. They're based in Germany. Eastoner joined through a team extension model, with our developers working on frontend development of their internal equipment monitoring system on an ongoing basis, for a few years now.

CLIENT GOAL

The client needed to enhance their internal mining equipment monitoring software, the system that gives their manufacturing engineers real-time visibility into underground equipment during active tunneling projects. Their TBMs run sensors and telemetry systems that collect thousands of data points per second, covering operational parameters, geotechnical and environmental data like soil composition, and boring performance progress. That data needed a frontend that could present it clearly and quickly, without the interface slowing engineers down when they needed answers fast.

CHALLENGES AND SOLUTION

Full redesign of the equipment monitoring system

Eastoner led the frontend redesign of the monitoring platform, building a modern interface from the ground up on Angular 18, React, and Tailwind. Applying current frontend performance practices produced a 2x improvement in page load times alongside the visual redesign. We also built new functionality for performance analytics and remote diagnostics, including custom dashboards, visualizations, and charts for historical trend analysis.

Real-time machine health tracking

The platform includes predictive maintenance and early fault detection. Engineers at the manufacturing company can monitor equipment health in real time, catch faults early, and either advise remotely or fix issues faster, avoiding the delays and reputational cost of equipment failure discovered too late. The system also flags component wear, so worn parts get replaced proactively instead of after they fail.

Remote monitoring of tunneling operations

The client excavates dozens of custom tunnels per year, often in remote regions across Asia, Africa, and South America, where sending an engineer on-site for every issue isn't practical. Remote monitoring lets HQ-based engineers track operations, monitor production rates, and spot bottlenecks without traveling to the site. That shifts troubleshooting from field technicians to HQ-based experts, cutting the cost and time a site visit would otherwise take.

The same data supports comparative performance analysis across projects: which machine configurations perform best in which soil types, and how machines behave in the field over time.

RESULT

The redesigned platform is now a critical internal tool for the client's engineering team. The frontend rebuild and updated tech stack delivered a 2x improvement in page load performance, a direct gain in day-to-day operational efficiency for engineers monitoring live tunneling projects.

The platform gives the client visibility into heavy machinery operations and tunneling progress that wasn't available before, supporting lower maintenance costs, better field operations, and the ability to scale to new projects globally without a proportional increase in on-site staff.
